What is your dream?

To live each day fully, and appreciate everything that comes my way – even if it challenges me.

What is my dream job?

Cannot say I can think of A dream job. As a result of my expat/nomadic experience I have done too many different ‘jobs’, reinvented myself too many times to be able to have such a conclusion. What I do know, after more than 30 years being employed, volunteering, travelling etc., is that whatever job I do does have to contain certain elements: be in an environment where there is personal contact with colleagues/public; involve teamwork but also chance to work alone from time to time; and be involved in an activity which serves others. Oh, and provide an income of course …

How did you achieve your goal = dream job? / how do you plan to achieve your goal=dream job?

Network, always meet new people, keep eyes open for new opportunities, be willing to take an occasional ‘risk’ and be ready to help others whenever you can.

What is your tip to others concerning the Dream Job / Life?

Be prepared to reinvent yourself, think out of the box – and take a look at how your skills, talents and interests transfer to sectors you may not have thought of immediately.

Who are you?

My passport says Canada, but I was born in Germany, travelled throughout my life as the daughter of expats; an expat myself; partner of an expat and as an expat mother. Today, 11 countries later, I am settled in The Hague – city and country which now is the one place I have lived the longest – 8 years in a row! Where will I be in the future? No idea. Not bothered by not having an answer to this either www.ahandinthehague.com

Dream Job of Henry Arvidsson

I have met Henry in 2011, when he was helping our mutual colleague shotting photos for him. I was among others the subject of Henry’s camera. Since than we have met at several occasions as The Hague is full of events for international, active people.

Name:                          Henry Arvidsson

Country / city:              The Netherlands / The Hague

What is your dream?

I don’t really dream but rather try to set realistic goals. Some 30 years ago I saw an old man waiting for the bus in Malmö in my native Sweden. I surmised that he had been working hard in the heavy ships industry in town until retired and that the heavy work had bent his back which now forced him to walk with a cane. Just as the bus arrived and stopped a group of three young men arrived at the bus stop. They walked to the door ahead of the old man who had been waiting in the cold. He was not amused and said something out of the corner of his mouth. Two things I learned from this. One, the world is full of people who are inconsiderate and lack respect. Two, I will never be bitter or regrets in my life. To date this promise stands, but it has not always been easy.

What is my dream job?

What I am doing right now. I am a photographer/video maker who has had the fortune of travelling the world.

How did you achieve your goal = dream job?

From the day that I completed my formal education in Photography in 1990 (in New York City) it has taken me over two decades to reach my goal. I was willing to take chances and not pass up any opportunity which came my way. It was not always related to photography/video but it gave me an opportunity to pursue my passion as a hobby and taught me something.

What is your tip to others concerning the Dream Job / Life?

Focus, persistence and determination. If you give any of those up you will also give up any chance to reach your goal or dream job. To constantly educate yourself is also necessary especially in a persuit that involves technology.

Who are you?

I am a Swedish born photographer/video maker, educated in civil engineering and photography. I have cleared mines in Southern Lebanon with the UN Peacekeeping Forces, worked as a Weapons of Mass Destruction Inspector in Iraq for five years and verified the destruction of Chemical Weapons worldwide with OPCW for a dozen years. These were my side tracks to get where I am today. During those two decades I built my portfolio and kept shooting. See my work at www.henryarvidsson.com

Dream Job of Olga Rook-Novikova

Name:                  Olga Rook-Novikova

Country/City:        Russia, Moscow

What is your dream?

To do the things that make me happy and to make other people happy!

What is my dream job?

I am in my dream job now as a photographer/artist! I capture people’s personality, feelings and minds, I stop special moments and help create memories that last forever. This makes me feel a bit like a magician and I enjoy this tremendously! I like to concentrate on another person fully and to reveal one’s special beauty in my images. These images then preserve a real part of you. Also, for many women a personal photo shoot is a n exciting and fun way to re-discover their femininity and to gain more self-confidence. I love to be in charge of this! And I love the idea of creating personal works of art for real-life people.

How did you achieve your goal = dream job? / how do you plan to achieve your goal=dream job?

There came a moment in my life when I said to myself that this should be time to start my own business: so that later in life I will not regret that I did not pursue my dream. When you go for something that is really your dream then you are motivated and ready to work hard. I did. And I found my niche. I knew that I want to offer the kind of photography that is not common but based on a chique boutique principle. I am offering my clients extra time and attention they need and process their images in an individual and artistic style. This is exactly what I love doing and there are people who appreciate this!

What is your tip to others concerning the Dream Job / Life?

Think about your goals in life clearly, formulate your goals consciously, define concrete steps to reach your goals, have a written plan! Don’t give up when it does not work out immediately, stay committed.

Dream Job of Maja Todorovic

I have met Maja in September of 2010 when she has joined my first ”Connect with your dream job” support group meeting. She almost participated in all of the meetings. We became friends (one of the best things which has happened after I launched Connect with your dream job). Later on Maja joined me on Connecting Women board. I am happy and proud to have her in my life.

Name:                  Maja Todorovic

Country / city:       Serbia / Zemun

What is your dream?

Well I have/had several dreams and most of them I have fulfilled! My teenage dream came true three years ago when my favorite bend got together again after 25 years and had the opportunity to see/hear them alive on the stage (Ultravox) and now their brand new album is going to be published in couple  of days! So there’s a lot of excitement about that! My other dream was finding a man that I could share my life with which also is fulfilled. And the last one (which one I’m still working on 🙂 is to help and teach people how they can live and work in more healthier and sustainable manner. It is closely connected to my other passion – which is writing.

What is my dream job?

After leaving my home country in 2010 to join my partner in the Netherlands I also left my job at the University where I worked as an assistant professor. Change was pretty harsh and it forced to me look deep inside myself and see which professional path I want to take. I knew I would still like to help and teach people about the importance of our environment and resources but I actually changed the means of doing that. I published a book called: “From environmentally responsible business to profit: practical guide for small and microenterprises” and is customized for Serbian market. The book has been very well received and now soon the Croatian version of the book and management system that there has been presented is going to be published. We are thinking of doing it for other markets as well. Now I can say that I’m living my dream job: doing meaningful job, helping people and all of that through writing!

How did you achieve your goal = dream job? / how do you plan to achieve your goal=dream job?

Achievement came through inspiration and persistence.

What is your tip to others concerning the Dream Job / Life?

What is your dream?

To live in harmony… to grow my son and to have enough time to appreciate our nature!

What is my dream job?

My dream job is an “unconventional” useful job.. I mean, it is related to quality of life, but it isn’t widely recognized… it is nature management!

How did you achieve your goal = dream job? / how do you plan to achieve your goal=dream job?

In the last 10 years I was involved in a large number of projects: environmental monitoring, nature conservation & management, sustainable productions (fishery)…only in 2008 I did understand what I really want: make sustainability reliable! after a MSc in Physics, I did work in environmental protection agency, in a park authority and as an independent freelance. It’s great! but the means never ends and, finally, next Monday I’ll defend my PhD in Environmental Science – Conservation and Management of Natural Resources. A great opportunity, as well as I feel really better …

Dream Job of Andrew Balcombe

I have met Andrew few years ago at the ”Feel at home in The Hague”’ Fair in the city hall of The Hague. He has approached the Connecting Women stand, where I was representing the CW, with his camera and microphone. It was my first camera act. Since then we have met several times always to do some interview where Andrew was running a show and I was bubbling to the camera. I must say he has a gift to make a person calm and relaxed (at least I did not feel any fear to be his star…).

Name:                  Andrew Balcombe

Country/City:        The Netherlands / The Hague

What is your dream?

I would like to publish my first book, (which is written by the way), I would also like to film and direct a music video (you asked). And then, once I have those out of the way, I would like to spend a year creating a wildlife and street photography book.

What is my dream job?

What I do now. I’m a freelance media creative, which means I write about a huge range of subjects. I also photograph the same range of subjects, this could be anything from the Mayor of The Hague to the Dutch Commandoes and Marines, and I also make films.

There are also a few other things I do, but they’re not as exciting.

How did you achieve your goal = dream job? / how do you plan to achieve your goal=dream job?

I finally told myself to stick to the path, do what I enjoy and work my arse off until I succeed.

I think its important to have a longterm plan, I always set myself a short and mid term timeline and have a clear idea of what I want to achieve by then.

If it is working fine, if not, I alter or change strategy. If you don’t adapt in this climate you are in trouble. It’s important to talk to people in your field and get new ideas and information. Sometimes you have to go beyond your fears and just ask those dumb questions. Often the answers will completely change your entire perspective or set you in a different direction.

Recently I had been working so hard and not getting as far as I had wanted. A trip to Paris followed by a day running around in the mud with the Commandos fixed that.

It gave me distance and most importantly perspective, then I had passion again to keep following my path.

What is your tip to others concerning the Dream Job / Life?

See above.I’m a man, who knows one must make hay while the sun is shining.

Who are you?

I am Andrew Balcombe and I’ve lived in The Hague for the last 12 years. Being an Australian, I still cry sometimes during the Dutch winters. You can see some of my work at www.andrewbalcombe.com and www.thexpat.tv
